After nine months of extensive research and development, a team of four undergraduates from Portsmouth University has completed their work on a challenging project for Senical. The brief was to design an efficient wind turbine with the emphasis on operating in urban locations. The team had to address multiple challenges in the design and build of the final prototype, all which added to the complexity of the project. The work undertaken by the team forms part of the final degree marks and adds value by working in a ‘live’ commercial environment.

Roy Hope, Development Director for Senical said “We have enjoyed collaborating with Portsmouth University and have been impressed with the quality of work and innovative ideas that the team has put into the project. This is something that we will continue to do for further projects”.

The theme for day three, which is our main involvement, is Global Growth: Starting and scaling up. Due to or recent exploits with the Growth Accelerator scheme and a UKTI trade mission – coupled with our ambitious growth plans, Senical are hoping to offer the delegates an insight into how we started through to where we are planning to be in three years time. More information to follow….

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the delegates and Growth Accelerator team who braved the cold conditions last night to attend the Growth Accelerator Road Show at Newbury Racecourse.

Senical were honoured to take part as guest speaker due to their recent involvement in the scheme which had a pretty dramatic influence on our business operations.

Steve Nicoll said “Public speaking does not come naturally so to say I was a little apprehensive would be an understatement. The brief was to describe the impact the program had on our business and how that process had made us more competitive. Being an avid reader of biographies of successful business figures, I made the decision to tell our story – warts and all, instead of introducing chart and graphs which had the potential to turns delegates attention off early on. I wanted to illustrate how and why we started our business, the good, bad and ugly decisions we’ve made and how we thought we had an ideal business model in place”.

“With the direction we received from our business coach Dave Symondson, we soon realised we were missing out on opportunities which were quite literally there for the taking. We rewrote our business plan and as a result the leads and opportunities are growing every day”.

The feedback we received during the networking after the talks had ended proved very favourable and delegates were somewhat surprised and refreshed to hear an honest assessment of our journey so far.

We’re not sure if the talking circuit is for us, but it’s always enjoyable to let your fellow entrepreneurs know that we’re all human and mistakes can happen…

Today saw Senical representing the SME community of Portsmouth as part of a three day program of events for a visiting Japanese delegation from the maritime city of Maizuru, Kyoto prefecture.

Due to our recent exploits in Japan, we were approached by the council to show how Senical as a business is working on building both collaborative and business relationships with Japanese organisations.

The program saw the delegation take in the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth as there are links dating back to 19th century. Admiral Togo of the Japanese Imperial Navy spent two years of his seven year naval training period in Portsmouth. He was so impressed with the brick built buildings here, he commissioned replica buildings to be built in Maizuru once he returned to Japan. Because of these historical naval links, Portsmouth twinned with Maizuru in 1998 and this spring we will see the 15th anniversary of the twinning.

The delegation then spent time at Senical HQ learning about our links and wish to do business with Japan. We demonstrated out smart grid technology, the SPM, and also discussed an exciting micro generation project we are looking for partners to collaborate on.

When the delegation left us, they were heading to the City Museum for a tour of the Sherlock Holmes exhibition which is currently on show there. Again, there is a ‘Holmes’ link with the city which hosted a specific Conan Doyle exhibition attracting some 20,000+ visitors in the six weeks it was open.

Steve Nicoll from Senical said “It was a real honour to be included as a representative for the SME community for the Maizuru delegation. We made sure the work we are doing and our international plans were showcased to the full. The delegation was very interested in our projects and there could well be some further actions to follow up on as a result”.

Senical has been invited to host a delegation from Miazuru, Japan & Portsmouth City Council after our recent participation on a UK Trade & Investment Smart Technology Trade Mission to Japan. We are absolutely delighted to be representing the SME community in forging links with Japan and building relationship which we hope will lead to lasting partnerships and business opportunities.

Miazuru twinned with Portsmouth City just less than fifteen years ago and the delegates are visiting the city keen to see how and what relations can be established and built. This will strengthen the bond between the two cities and offer businesses in the city opportunities that may well appear to be out of reach on paper. We are really honoured to be part of the event and are hoping to showcase exactly what the Portsmouth SME community can offer.

We’ll include a full report of the day which is currently scheduled for 19th February.
