ENIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Two key environmental impacts are caused by unnecessary electricity consumption, they are additional emissions of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and using up energy resources.
Reducing CO2 emissions
Using Ban The Button means that households switching off a typical arrangement of electronic entertainment equipment whennot in use will save approximately 570kWh* of electricity over the course of the year. Generating this electricity would typically produce 245kg** of Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
Estimated annual CO2 emissions from devices left on standby in the UK:
*** Stereos - 1,600,000 tonnes
*** Videos - 960,000 tonnes
*** TVs - 480,000 tonnes
*** Consoles - 390,000 tonnes
*** DVD players - 100,000 tonnes
*** Set-top boxes - 60,000 tonnes*** (Source: Energy Saving Trust)
Saving energy resources
If everyone in the UK switched off unused appliances it would save £800 million a year. Leaving some appliances plugged in and switched on at the socket means they’re still using energy – so turn TVs, games consoles and mobile phone chargers off atthe mains to save yourself money.
* Based on the Which? Report identified savings of £40 assuming an average price of 7p per kWh.
**The Climate Change Levy Negotiated Agreements and the ETS use an average carbon intensity factor for the estimation of carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption of electricity: this has been fixed at 0.43 kgCO2/kWh
